José Almeida Fernandes

José Fernandes served  as a teaching assistant while obtaining an Adv. LL.M. in International Tax Law from Leiden University, The Netherlands in 2007. He holds an under-graduate degree in Law from Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon (2001). He is a fellow of the Group for Research on European and International Taxation (GREIT). He is a part of the SEMAPA tax team and was previously a part of the tax team at Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados since 2001. He is a regular contributor to Tax Notes International and IBFD publications. In 2011, he was Deputy to Secretary of State for Tax Affairs of the XIX Portuguese Constitutional Government. In 2007, he was on secondment in Amsterdam with Loyens & Loeff.  He also maintains affiliations with: Ordem dos Advogados (since 2004), International Fiscal Association (IFA). Associação Fiscal Portuguesa (AFP) and Associação Portuguesa dos Consultores Fiscais (APCF). His main areas of expertise include - Tax planning and Tax advising, International Tax matters, Transfer Pricing, Securitization, Investment Funds and Derivatives & Financial Instruments – for multinational financial institutions and corporations, as well as for some of the major Portuguese financial institutions and corporations. In Tax litigation he has represented international and Portuguese corporations in cases involving the Taxation of intangibles, thin capitalization and tax benefits. He is a regular contributor to Tax Notes International and IBFD publications. He is a member of the research group on Tax Governance: International Standards, Patriotisms and Exiles.
