Group III: Markets and Social Values in a Globalized Economy

The Principal Researcher of this Group is Prof. Dr. Miguel Moura e Silva.

Wealth and income inequality across the world, the global challenges posed by the climate crisis, the regulation of Big Tech in its economic, social and cultural implications, and the post-pandemic recovery create challenges to a global economic order strutured around the paradigm of free markets and limited government intervention as the best way to attain economic growth. This Group is organized to investigate and set up policy and legal solutions to address how these challenges imply possible paradigm shifts in the balance between free markets and new forms of governance in a globalized economy. The group will work on an interdisciplinary basis, combining legal analysis with insights from economics to political science to developing new approaches to find adequate solutions for finding a voice for social values in the context of competitive markets.

The output in this period is very significant, particularly in the publishing of the Competition & Regulation Law Review, in cooperation with the Portuguese Competition Authority, ensuring the participation of researchers from across the globe.

The post-graduate course on Competition Law and Regulation, with a forthcoming 15th edition in 2021, continues to provide the most thorough course in the field in Portugal, bringing together academics from different backgrounds, mostly lawyers and economists, in private practice and officials from regulators.

The group has made a significant contribution to research, particularly in the field of competition law, through the database of Portuguese case-law in competition law, making all judgments available in open-access.
