Conference “40 Years of VAT in Portugal – Different Perspectives”

The Order of Certified Accountants (OCC), in partnership with the Institute of Economic, Financial and Tax Law (IDEFF) and the Research Centre for European, Economic, Financial and Tax Law (CIDEEFF), will organise, on 5 March, at the António Domingues de Azevedo Auditorium in Lisbon, a conference under the theme “40 Years of VAT in Portugal – Different Perspectives”.

Portugal marks this year four decades of VAT. The new tax, which replaced the former Transactions Tax (IT), came into force on 1 January 1986 and has proven to be the “most stable tax in our tax system”, as Clotilde Celorico Palma is keen to point out in an article published in the January 2026 issue of Contabilista magazine, on the occasion of this anniversary.

This conference therefore proposes a multiplicity of perspectives to analyse a tax that is absolutely critical to revenue collection, bringing together a diverse group of specialists who will present their own views on VAT as seen from academia, consultancy, the tax administration and the courts. More than enough ingredients to accompany this initiative.

Within the framework of the Continuing Professional Development Regulations, this event awards four credits.

Registration is free of charge, subject to prior registration on the Order’s website.
